There are normally two major growth periods for moss during the year. The first occurs during the autumn when the spores are produced, and if not killed during the winter by frosts will persist into spring when more spores are produced before the moss dies.

The second major growth period is the spring when further spores are produced. These are normally killed by the first spell if hot weather (shaded and damp areas exempt).
