Pigeons

The presence of feral pigeons and especially their faeces represents a potential health hazard to your family, employees and to the general public. This is particularly so when large accumulations of filth build up inside a building. They are commonly carriers of a number of serious human diseases including Salmonellosis, Psittacosis and Pseudo-tuberculosis.

Their faeces provide an ideal environment for the growth of the organisms causing such diseases as Histoplasmosis, Aspergillosis, Cryptococcis and Listeriosis. Faeces represent a health and safety hazard for employees who have to remove them or work in their vicinity. They are thus a special problem in the renovation of buildings where large accumulations have been allowed to build-up.

Dealing with such accumulations can be expensive and time consuming because of the protective equipment and procedures that may be required. Health and safety problems are also caused by the build up of faeces due to the slippery and unsafe footing it provides on walkways and ledges hindering proper maintenance. This may also be a particular problem during building works and renovation.

Feral Pigeon (Columba livia)

Pigeons are attracted to urban areas by the presence of food and places to roost and breed. Flocks of pigeons typically congregate on buildings and can create a nuisance, including making a noise, fouling and even causing property damage. Pigeons do carry diseases such as ornithosis and salmonellosis.

Pigeon Proofing

Pigeons can be prevented from entering or  roosting on buildings either by netting over vulnerable  areas or  by fixing   spiking, wires or other  purpose-designed devices to deter them from landing on ledges, pipework, window sills or other structures.Recently a new product, bird free optical gel, has come onto the market, it creates a visual spectrum that birds see through ultraviolet, it appears to them as fire. The fitting of proofing and deterrent measures can be complicated and is carried out by our experienced contractors. Correctly installed, these measures can provide a long term solution to pigeon problems.

Pigeon Guano Clean-up

Overnight roosting/breeding problems are the most serious, normally resulting in much larger quantities of pigeon droppings being present than with daytime perching. This is because when pigeons are exploiting a food source during the daytime they are constantly on the move, checking each of their numerous feeding sites and never spending long on one site. When the birds are roosting, however, they are static for anything up to 16 hours depending on the time of year. In the summer months they may only be in their roosting sites for 8-10 hours, but in winter it can be as long as 16 hours and in some cases even longer.
